What Is a LiFePO4 Battery?

LiFePO4 stands for lithium iron phosphate, a chemistry used in rechargeable battery packs for storage, backup and mobile applications. This guide explains the chemistry in general terms. It is not a product specification, and it does not describe any particular model on this site. Where a model-specific figure is needed, the product pages should be used instead.

The chemistry in plain terms

A LiFePO4 cell uses lithium iron phosphate as its cathode material. The chemistry is known for thermal stability compared with some other lithium chemistries, for a flat discharge voltage curve and for a long cycle life under the right conditions. Those are general properties of the chemistry, not promises for a particular pack. A finished pack's behaviour also depends on its cells, its management system, its housing and its terminals, so two packs using the same chemistry can still differ in voltage, capacity, current limits and dimensions.

The nominal voltage of a single LiFePO4 cell is commonly described as 3.2 V. Packs are built by connecting cells in series to reach a system voltage - for example four cells in series for a 12.8 V pack, eight cells in series for a 25.6 V pack and sixteen cells in series for a 51.2 V pack - and in parallel to reach a capacity. That is why a pack's voltage and capacity are decided by its arrangement, not by its chemistry alone. A buyer who understands the arrangement can read a pack specification more accurately, because the arrangement explains why two packs at the same voltage can have different capacities and why two packs at the same capacity can have different voltages.

Where LiFePO4 packs are used

LiFePO4 packs are used for home storage, backup power, recreational vehicles, boats, solar storage and small mobile applications, among others. The application pages on this site describe those uses in general terms, using the company's general application titles as their boundary. An application description does not make a particular pack suitable for that application; the pack's voltage, capacity, current limits and dimensions must still be checked against the system it will serve. That distinction is the reason this site keeps guide pages, application pages and product pages separate.

What this guide does not do

This guide does not give a cycle-life figure, a charge voltage or a current limit for any model, because those figures are model-specific and belong on the product pages. It does not recommend a capacity for a particular house, vehicle or boat, because a recommendation needs the load data for that installation. It does not discuss selling figures, because this site does not list fixed selling figures. Buyers who need a model-specific figure should use the product pages and the enquiry checklist, rather than taking a general statement from this guide as a specification.

Quotations are confirmed per order. Minimum order quantity and lead time are unavailable on this site, so they are not stated as company policy and must be confirmed per model in the enquiry. This site does not list fixed selling figures, because a figure depends on the model, the quantity and the order terms. A quotation should list the model, the quantity and the specification confirmed for that model, so the buyer and the manufacturer are working from the same description.

Enquiry checklist

Before sending an enquiry, note the voltage, capacity, quantity, application and any required certification document. State whether the pack will be used indoors or outdoors, and whether a display or a particular terminal type is needed. Minimum order quantity and lead time are unavailable on this site and are confirmed per model in the enquiry. Quotations are confirmed per order.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get a quotation?

Send an enquiry with the voltage, capacity and quantity you need, plus the application. Quotations are confirmed per order, and specifications are confirmed per model before payment. This site does not list fixed selling figures.

What certification documents can you provide?

ISO 9001 is stated by the company. Certificates are available upon request. If a buyer needs a certificate for a specific model, ask for it in the enquiry and name the model, so the correct document can be checked.

Are the specifications on this page valid for every model?

No. Specifications are shown per model and must not be read across the whole range. Where a value is not listed for a model, the page says to confirm per model rather than filling in a generic figure.
